A scenery developer team FSDG has released Cusco Airport, also known as Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, ICAO: SPZO, for Microsoft Flight Simulator. It is an international airport located in the city of Cusco, in southeastern Peru. Cusco, a principal tourist attraction in Latin America, receives various domestic flights as well as some international flights. The 3,397 meters (11,146 feet) long runway is completely paved. It operates at limited capacity due to its precarious location near the city’s center. Despite these limitations, the airport has consistently ranked as Peru’s second most important air terminal.
Cusco Airport is considered one of the most difficult airports in the world because of the high altitude, the difficult winds, and of course the big slope of the runway. With an altitude difference of almost 50 (!) meters between both ends of the runway, pilots have only one direction to land and take off, regardless of the winds, which often make both maneuvers a real challenge. The lack of an ILS and the sight of a crashed B737 at the side of the runway aren’t helping much either. This airport is only for skilled pilots – are you one of them?
